Keep Rock Island Beautiful offers educational presentations, community events, supplies for neighborhood cleanups, recycling and litter prevention programs, and awards for outstanding efforts by schools, businesses and in beautifying, cleaning and improving the environment.
AWARDS
Keep Rock Island Beautiful presents monthly awards to businesses or organizations who have made significant efforts to beautify their property and keep it litter free. In the spring, we visit each school in Rock Island District #41 and present the “Golden Rake Award” to the school who has the least litter and cleanest property. In April 2009 the “Golden Rake Award” was given to Jordan Catholic School.
EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS
Our Trash Sister Project is designed to meet the needs of any age group. We will visit your community meeting, event or classroom to educate and facilitate recycling and reducing the solid waste stream. Call to schedule your visit today. Keep Rock Island Beautiful provides educational programs to schools and organizations that promote the importance of recycling and litter contro. To schedule a program, please contact us.
Adopt-A-Highway
By Keep Rock Island Beautiful
Keep Rock Island Beautiful sponsors 37 organized groups containing 644 volunteers who have adopted and regularly clean 33.5 miles of adopted streets in Rock Island. You might have noticed the signs scattered here and there on the avenues and streets of Rock Island. This is the Adopt-A-Highway program in action. Our volunteers are committed to keeping the community clean. Together these volunteers picked up 18,030 pounds of trash in 2008.
Are you interested in forming a group to “Adopt -A-Highway”? Groups can consist of friends, co-workers, or family. Each volunteer group is responsible for a section of highway and agrees to remove litter a minimum of four times per year for a minimum of two years. Keep Rock Island Beautiful will provide safety vests and bags for your cleanup efforts.
An organization wishing to become part of the Adopt-A-Highway Program will need to fill out an Adopt-A-Highway application. The completed application should be signed and returned to Keep Rock Island Beautiful at P.O. Box 3603, Rock Island, IL 61204-3603.
Once the applicant has signed an agreement, it is referred to the City Council who authorizes the City Manager to sign the agreement. When the agreement has been signed by the City Manager, the Municipal Services Division of the Public Works Department is notified to begin their procedures to install the Adopt-A-Highway signs. The signs indicate the sections of street to be adopted noting the name of the organization and the length in miles adopted. At this time a representative from Keep Rock Island Beautiful will meet with the organization to review the agreement and safety rules.
Once the official “Adopt-A-Highway” signs are installed, the organization may begin to maintain the street.
